Medical Doctors in Austria 1938-1945 - Deprivation of Rights, Expulsion, Murder
The aim of the research project is a comprehensive historical survey of the deprivation of rights and persecution of medical doctors in Austria during the National Socialist era.
As part of the project, the legal basis for the discriminatory measures taken against doctors will be researched, for example, the withdrawal of medical licences, de- registration from the medical board, and dismissal from hospital employment. Building on this, an examination of the concrete implementation of these regulations will follow.
Every doctor discriminated against and persecuted between 1938 and 1945 on ‘racial’ or political grounds, or on account of their sexual orientation, will be documented and their individual fates reconstructed. The focus will be on both the career path of those affected as well as what happened to them after March 1938.
Some biographies, for example those of Sigmund Freud, Otto Loewi and Viktor Frankl, are well known – now the fate of every individual who previously went unnoticed will be documented. The research findings and biographies will subsequently be published in a fitting memorial book.
The project will run until June 2017.
